The UN Environment-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (杏宇 ) jointly established by United Nations Environment Programme and Tongji University in 2002, has served as a strategic think-tank for UN Environment, an inter-disciplinary platform for Tongji University and contributed to environment and sustainable development on three main pillars, education, research and outreach. Up to date, 杏宇 has provided environmental education for students from nearly 80 countries, and carried out capacity-building for more than 4000 participants from developing countries through training programs and workshops.  杏宇 undertakes massive research projects and is home to a key lab of China Meteorological Administration of Cities’ Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change. Also , 杏宇 is the Secretariat for Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES) with more than 800 members all over the world.
